Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has dismissed reports that popular Nigerian singer David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has been banned from entering or performing in the state.
The controversy followed a viral video in which one of the governor’s aides, Pastor Kassy Chukwu, claimed that Davido had been barred from Edo State.
However, Okpebholo, through a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, rejected the claim and said it did not represent the position of his administration.
The governor described the person behind the alleged ban as an impostor and said the Edo State Government had no intention of preventing Davido from visiting the state.
According to Okpebholo, Edo remains open to everyone, irrespective of political affiliation, beliefs or personal associations. He added that if Davido decides to perform in the state, his administration would be willing to work with him.
The governor also expressed admiration for the singer, noting that Davido’s mother is from Edo State. He described the artiste as one of Nigeria’s prominent global ambassadors who has continued to make the country proud through his achievements in the music industry.
Okpebholo further clarified that the disagreements surrounding Davido’s involvement in the recent Osun State election were strictly political and should not be interpreted as a personal dispute.
He reaffirmed his respect for the singer and said the Edo State Government would be pleased to welcome and host him whenever he chooses to visit.
The governor also congratulated Davido on his contributions to the Nigerian music industry and expressed hope that the singer would eventually receive a Grammy award.
