The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as its new Speaker following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.

Agbebaku’s resignation was announced during Monday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Osamwonye Atu, who presided over the sitting. The former Speaker, who represents Owan West Constituency, reportedly resigned amid moves by lawmakers to remove him from office.

Following the announcement, Sunday Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the speakership. His nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka of Owan East Constituency.

Idiaye was subsequently sworn in by the Clerk of the House and assumed office as Speaker of the Eighth Assembly.

The Assembly also approved changes to its leadership structure. Ojiezele was named Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor of Igueben Constituency became Deputy Majority Leader. Natasha Osawaru was also approved as the new Minority Leader.

Speaking after his emergence, Idiaye criticized the former leadership, alleging poor administration, corruption and repeated adjournments that affected legislative activities.

He said the new leadership would support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration and work to ensure that the Assembly contributes to the development of Edo State.

Agbebaku became Speaker in June 2023. His tenure had previously faced internal tensions, including the suspension of three lawmakers in 2024 over an alleged impeachment plot.

The latest development marks a significant change in the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly.
