Former President of Nigeria, Chief Mathew Olusegun Obasanjo, has been appointed the new Chairman of the Council of World ex-Presidents.
Obasanjo thus becomes the first African to occupy that position.
The former Nigerian president was appointed at the 32nd annual plenary meeting of world ex-presidents, which took place in Newport, United Kingdom recently.
He took over from Franz Vranitzky, a former Chancellor of Austria (1986-1996) before he later became the Chairman of the Council from 1st July 2010 to June 2016.
Obasanjo’s predecessors are:
(1) Helmut Schmidt of Germany.
(2) Malcolm Fraser of Australia.
(3) Jean Chretien of Canada;
(4) Franz Vranitzky of Austria.
Obasanjo of Nigeria is the fifth Chairman of the world body.
