The United States launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iran on Sunday, saying the attacks were intended to “punish” Iranian forces after two American service members were killed during Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan. The strikes marked another major escalation in the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Iran responded quickly, announcing drone attacks on two US military bases in Kuwait. Iranian officials claimed the strikes hit an ammunition depot at Camp Udairi as well as radar and air surveillance systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base. Tehran also reported fresh attacks targeting US positions in Jordan and Bahrain.
The latest fighting comes after preliminary ceasefire efforts collapsed, leaving both sides locked in a widening conflict centered on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Iran has continued to use control of the strategic waterway as leverage, while the United States has increased military pressure in the region.
US Central Command said its latest airstrikes targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units believed to be responsible for the attack that killed two American troops. Another US service member remains missing.
Iranian leaders vowed strong retaliation. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the United States would receive an “unforgettable lesson” if attacks continued, while senior military officials threatened to resume full-scale offensive operations and deliver a “decisive and devastating response.”
The conflict has also affected civilians across the region. Iranian authorities reported dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries since the latest round of fighting began. Kuwait said Iranian attacks targeted civilian infrastructure, prompting residents to stock up on water and essential supplies amid fears of prolonged unrest.
Iran also accused the United States of striking power facilities and desalination plants in southern Iran, disrupting drinking water supplies in several villages. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations have stalled, raising concerns that the conflict could continue to intensify.
