No fewer than 30 people, including women and children, were reportedly killed after suspected bandits launched a deadly attack on Naridom community in Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community between 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. on Monday, firing indiscriminately and operating for more than three hours. The assault left scores dead, destroyed homes and shops, and plunged the community into mourning.
A resident, Barnabas Musa, said the attack began shortly after midnight, prompting frantic calls for help from terrified residents.
“The attack started between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. this morning and continued for over three hours,” Musa said. “At least 30 people, including women and children, were killed, while the gunmen also set two houses and four shops on fire.”
Another resident, Comrade Friday Ango, described the incident as one of the worst tragedies to hit the community. He alleged that the attackers wiped out much of one family’s household, killing about five children belonging to a resident identified as Mr. Emma.
“They wiped out one man’s family. They killed about five of his children,” Ango said.
He added that residents were still recovering bodies and compiling the names of those killed at the time of filing the report.
“People are still bringing out corpses from the community, so the names of the victims are still being gathered,” he said.
The attack has left Naridom community in deep grief, with families searching for missing relatives and preparing to bury their loved ones.
Residents have called on security agencies and the Kaduna State Government to strengthen security across Chawai Chiefdom and other parts of Kauru Local Government Area, which have witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. Efforts to obtain a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful.
