PFIPC Scandal: Atiku Demands Tinubu’s Resignation Over Contradictory Narratives

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as conflicting narratives surrounding the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) accounts.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the differing accounts presented by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have plunged the administration into a serious credibility crisis.
According to Atiku, testimony reportedly presented by the CBN before the House of Representatives contradicts the earlier position of the OAGF regarding the opening of the PFIPC accounts.
“This is where the cover-up appears to begin,” the statement read. “One institution denied authorising the opening of the PFIPC accounts and alleged forgery. Another, before the representatives of the Nigerian people, stated that the accounts were opened on the directive of the Accountant-General after due process was followed. Both accounts cannot be true.”
The former Vice President said the public disagreement between two of the country’s key financial institutions raises serious concerns and demands an immediate response from the President.
“When two of your most sensitive financial and monetary authorities publicly contradict each other on the same transaction, no serious leader needs a clairvoyant to know that his administration is trapped in a web of deception and a profound crisis of credibility,” Atiku said.
He urged President Tinubu to clarify which account his administration accepts and questioned the delay in launching what he described as a truly independent investigation into the matter.
Atiku also criticised the continued silence of the Attorney-General of the Federation, arguing that it has further fuelled public suspicion and strengthened the perception that the government is more focused on managing the political fallout than uncovering the truth.
The ADC presidential candidate called on the National Assembly to summon both the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to appear jointly before its investigative committee under oath to provide Nigerians with a clear and consistent account of the events.
According to him, the PFIPC controversy has grown beyond a dispute over bank accounts and now reflects broader concerns about transparency, accountability and oversight within government institutions.
He maintained that President Tinubu should apologise to Nigerians over the controversy and said that if the administration is unable to restore public confidence through an independent investigation and ensure those responsible are held accountable, the President should step down from office.
